The day trip to the Lassithi Plateau offers a combination of mythology, natural beauty, and Cretan tradition. It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque plateaus in Greece. The Lassithi Plateau is narrow and long, stretching from east to west, 10 kilometers long and 4-5 kilometers wide. It is surrounded by mountains, the highest peak being Spathi (or Dikti) at 2,148 meters. The fertile soil of the plateau attracted settlers as early as the Neolithic period (6000 BC). The plateau is also known for its picturesque windmills. In the 1950s and 1960s, the plateau was one of the first wind farms in Europe. There were about 10-13 thousand windmills that pumped groundwater, which the inhabitants used to irrigate their crops.

Our first visit to the village of Krasi

Upon arriving in the village, we see the imposing giant plane tree with a trunk circumference of 24 meters that shades almost the entire square. The plane tree is known for its size and age, which, according to the locals, is estimated to be between 1,800 and 2,000 years old.

Right next to it is the "Big Fountain," the famous stone-built aqueduct, which is considered one of the most beautiful water supply complexes in Crete. It was built in 1890 by master craftsmen of the time.

When you come to Krasi, you will find nice places for coffee, food, and raki, enjoying the beauty of a mountain village in Crete that retains its traditional character with nice taverns offering traditional flavors.

The historic monastery of Keras Kardiotisa, with its rare frescoes and religious significance, is the next stop before climbing up to the plateau. The monastery is one of the most important monastic complexes in Crete, first mentioned in 1333 and dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary.
