Venetian Fortress “Rocca a Mare”

Our day begins with a visit to the impressive "Koule" fortress at the entrance to the port. It was built by the Venetians on top of an older circular tower that existed since Byzantine times and, after many alterations and reinforcements between 1429 and 1540, it took its final form. In 1533, a large white relief of the lion of St. Mark was placed above the entrance to the fortress.

Since then, there have been a series of disasters and restorations, the most significant being the destruction caused by the Ottoman siege of the port. Restoration and maintenance work continues to this day in order to protect the city from erosion, mainly from the sea.

25th August Street

Walking up the main pedestrian street that leads from the port to the square, we come across the renovated Venetian Loggia, an architectural gem from the Venetian period. You can also visit the local open market where you will find beautiful souvenirs and local products, enjoy your coffee in the beautiful cafes around, taste the famous Greek "souvlaki" and cool off with ice cream from the ice cream parlors along the street.

Cathedral Church of Saint Titus

Nearby, we will find the sacred pilgrimage site of the historic Cathedral of Saint Titus (First Bishop of Crete), which was originally built as the metropolis of the Cretan province during the Roman era. It was rebuilt in 961 when Crete was recaptured by the Byzantines and the capital was moved from Gortyna to Chandaka. The church was destroyed and rebuilt in 1446, followed by destruction by fire and rebuilt in 1557. After the conquest of the island by the Turks, it became a mosque, The mosque was known as the Vizier Mosque and was subsequently destroyed by the earthquake of 1856. The current building began construction in 1869 and, after renovations, has its current form.

Lion Square

We continue our tour in the heart of the city, where the Morosini Fountain (also known as the Lion Fountain) stands, a popular meeting place with many cafes and taverns around it. The fountain was inaugurated on April 25, 1628 (the feast day of St. Mark), then the patron saint of the city. The fountain was designed by Francesco Morosini, after whom it was named, and was the city's main source of water. The water came from Mount Yuchta in Archanes, 15 kilometers away, and reached the central aqueduct in Heraklion. It consists of four lions with water flowing from their mouths, and the octagonal shape of the reservoir allowed more people to draw water, as each semicircle could accommodate five people, meaning that forty people could stand around the fountain at the same time, dip their containers in and fill them up.

Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

Next is a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the largest and most remarkable museums in Greece and one of the most important in Europe, which presents almost the entirety of Minoan civilization. Its exhibits include representative samples from all periods of Cretan prehistory and history, covering approximately 5,500 years, from the Neolithic era to Roman times. The unique masterpieces of Minoan art occupy a dominant position in its collections. The collection of Minoan antiquities is the most important in the world, and the museum is considered the preeminent museum of Minoan civilization, as it houses a huge collection of Minoan objects, including the famous Phaistos Disc.
